Galicica National Park is one of North Macedonia’s most precious natural gems, known for its unique flora and fauna.
It’s a true botanical paradise with over 1,600 plant species, more than 40 of which are Balkan or local endemics.
But did you know that Lynx lynx balcanicus – the Balkan lynx – also roams here? A STRICTLY PROTECTED and critically endangered species, among the rarest in Europe.
In 2020, after nearly 50 years, a camera trap captured one! A historic moment – proof that the lynx is walking through Galicica’s forests once again.
Over the past three years, the lynx has been recorded 12 times. This rare hunter, a natural regulator of the ecosystem, is slowly reclaiming its place.
Whether you’re a nature lover—or even better, a trail runner—as you explore Galicica, someone might be silently watching.
The lynx is a symbol of the wild, a silent guardian of the forest, and proof that when given the chance, nature can recover.
Let’s protect it, respect nature, and keep being part of its story.
Every runner at Ohrid Ultra-Trail 2025 will receive a unique branded Ultra Lynx T-shirt in their starter pack - designed by Aleksandar Cheski and karas4training.com, and made by Remorker!
